Laine Stoker

Laine was born in Whitley City, Kentucky and recalls drawing constantly as a child.  She has spent most of her adult life working in the Insurance Industry.  She has taken courses in drawing, painting, and art history at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio.  She also has taken art classes at local Art Centers in Watercolor and Oils.  Now that she has retired from Insurance she wants to pursue her childhood dream of becoming an artist.

Artists who have influenced her through the years are many.   Margaret King is a watercolorist who paints in fine detail miniature landscapes.  For Laine, she was a wonderful teacher and mentor.   While in college she learned to figure draw from Christi Pope.  She kept her humble about her work.  Most of her knowledge of the “craft and cuisine” of painting she acquired on her own “from examining the many painters, past and present, works that I admire,” she says.  This pantheon includes historical figures such as Monet, Renoir, and Cezanne, as well as more contemporary figures, such as N.A. Noel.

Most recently while working in Plein Air, she was awarded Best of Show and First in Oil with her painting of “Martinsville a Street Scene.”  This event was at the 50th Anniversary Fall Foliage Festival Paint Out in Morgan County on October 3, 2009.
