Steve Smith is 36-year resident of Hancock County. He lives in Sugar Creek Township with his wife, Barbara. Together they own an insurance agency in New Palestine. Steve took private lessons in oil painting for a short time in the mid-1970’s. He started painting again in 2002 after taking a 22-year break to build a business and raise children. He paints realistically in oils – landscape and still life.

Steve has studied at the Indianapolis Art Center, Herron School of Art, Taos Institute of Arts, and the Stutz Art Center. Among his teachers are Lois Davis, M. Kathryn Massey, Doug Daniel, Jacobina Trump, Shirley Despot, Julia McKee, and Ann Templeton.

Steve has shown work at the Indianapolis Art Center,Will Vawter Shows,   Greenfield Banking Company gallery, Greenfield Chamber of Commerce gallery, and Riley Festival. Most  recently his work was shown at the University of Indianapolis De Haan fine arts center in a show titled “Seeing the Land”, featuring landscapes from regional artists.

Travels in Europe and the American Southwest have given inspiration for his painting. He paints en plein aire frequently - on trips to the Southwest and around Indiana. The Smith’s home – another favorite subject - has a pond complete with water lilies, willows, and irises reminiscent of Giverny.

Artist’s statement:
“Painting is rewarding for me because it makes me more aware of my surroundings and everyday scenes that often go unnoticed. When I paint a landscape, I have to break it down to basic elements: color, value, and perspective. Even if don’t capture the scene exactly, I have a feeling of time and place.”
